It all started....As with almost ALL great ideas it started in the pub one wet and windy Sunday afternoon. We'd been rained off the Welsh mountains for the day (again) and so sought refuge in the local pub, rather than our damp tents. While my friends were avid climbers they were not fans of sailing and loved to taught me about my 'posh' pastime at every chance they got. Their perception was that sailing was for the rich and that the marinas were full of 'Rah Rahs' as they liked to put it.I did point out to them that I was not a 'Rah Rah' and liked to sail and you didn't need thousands to own and boat and more importantly, the technical aspect of 'sailing' was not the be all and end all for me. After all I was far too bad a sailor to become a competitive racer - sadly.
Keen to get them on board (ha ha) I told them about "Sea, Ice and Rock" where a chance meeting between Chris Bonnington and Robin Knox-Johnson turned a simple sailing trip to Skye and then a jaunt along the Cullin Ridge, into a journey to Greenland to climb a mountain. But again I was poo poo'd as it was pointed out that both these people were not with out money or resources. It was in the blink of an eye and a sip of a pint that the next statement came blarting out... "I bet you can buy a boat, rig and prep it and then sail it round the west coast of Scotland for less then five grand!" "Mooring fees, repairs to the boat and everything? For less than five grand?" "Yes" "Rubbish, no way that's possible!" "I'll prove it!" This brash statement, made in the heat of the moment, knocked about my mind over the last 10 years or so, and it now underpins the idea behind the expedition I now want to undertake. Going forward... mainly standing still
So this is my web site, come blog that will (I hope) track the project over its life span, which is already into a decade!? Hope you enjoy what is here and keep coming back..
